Your child will never tell you they see colour differently.
They have nothing to compare it to. Colour vision deficiency is common, permanent and easy to miss for years, and the fix is not a product.

Colour vision deficiency affects about 1 in 12 boys and about 1 in 200 girls, and the red-green type is by far the most common. It is almost always inherited, it does not get worse over time, and there is no cure. Children rarely report it, because the way they see colour is the only way they have ever seen it โ so it is usually caught by an adult noticing odd colour choices, or by an eye exam. The real help is not a special lens; it is a diagnosis and a few small classroom changes.

Why the child is never the one who notices
A child with colour vision deficiency is not seeing a greyed-out world and wondering what is wrong. They are seeing the world they have always seen. When they call a green crayon brown, they are not making a mistake in their own frame of reference โ they are naming what they perceive.
AAPOS makes the point plainly: because most people with colour deficits can still see some colours, they often do not know they see colour differently from everyone else. That is why this is one of the few common childhood vision conditions where the child gives you almost no useful signal.
The numbers
How common is it, and why mostly boys
The National Eye Institute puts it at about 1 in 12 men, and AAPOS uses the same figure for boys. The American Optometric Association gives roughly 8% of white males and about 0.5% of women โ worth noting that prevalence varies by ancestry, so the headline figure is not identical for every population.
The sex difference comes from how the condition is inherited. Red-green colour vision deficiency is carried on the X chromosome. As the NEI explains, boys need only one affected X chromosome to have it, while girls need both of theirs to carry it โ which is why it is so much rarer in girls. Blue-yellow and complete colour vision deficiency are not X-linked, and affect both sexes equally.
The types
What "colour blind" actually means
Red-green โ by far the most common. The NEI describes deuteranomaly, where greens look more red, as the most common form of all, and protanomaly, where reds look greener and dimmer. Both are usually mild. The stronger forms, protanopia and deuteranopia, mean red and green cannot be told apart at all.
Blue-yellow โ less common. Tritanomaly makes blue hard to separate from green, and yellow from red. Tritanopia, per the NEI, also makes colours look generally less bright.
Complete colour vision deficiency โ rare. Sometimes called achromatopsia. No colour perception at all, and often reduced visual sharpness and real light sensitivity alongside it.
The word "blindness" does most of the damage here. For the overwhelming majority of children this is a shift in which colours are distinguishable, not an absence of colour.
Inherited or acquired
The one pattern worth acting on quickly
Most colour vision deficiency is present from birth. But colour vision can also be lost later, and the NEI lists the causes: eye or brain injury including retinal detachment, brain tumours affecting the optic nerve, radiation treatment, and diseases including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Certain medicines can do it too, including hydroxychloroquine, prescribed for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The AOA adds leukaemia, sickle cell anaemia and chemical exposure to that list.
Here is why that matters for a parent. Inherited colour vision deficiency, as AAPOS notes, is lifelong and does not usually get better or worse with time. So a child whose colour vision was fine and has changed does not fit the inherited pattern โ and several things on that acquired list are serious. A noticeable change in colour vision is worth a prompt call to your eye doctor rather than a wait-and-see.
At school
Where it quietly costs a child
School runs on colour far more than most adults remember. Reading levels marked by coloured book labels. Behaviour charts on a traffic-light system. Teaching points written on the whiteboard in red or green. Pie charts and bar graphs. Coloured counters in maths. Team bibs in PE, where the ball or the opposing kit can visually disappear against the grass.
The UK charity Colour Blind Awareness โ a campaigning organisation rather than a clinical body, and its figures are UK-based โ estimates that roughly one child in every classroom is affected and that around 80% are still undiagnosed by the time they reach secondary school. Even allowing for the source, the direction is consistent with what AAPOS says about children not knowing they see differently.
The Children's Eye Foundation of AAPOS puts the consequence bluntly: children with colour vision deficiency often go undiagnosed for too long, and it can affect their confidence โ and sometimes gets mistaken for a learning difficulty.

We sell glasses, so let us be straight about this: no lens we or anyone else makes will fix colour vision deficiency. The AOA states it directly โ tinted lenses can increase some people's ability to tell colours apart, but nothing can make them truly see the deficient colour. AAPOS describes these lenses as helping some people with red-green deficits, not all. And the NEI is unambiguous that there is no cure for the inherited form.
Get it properly tested, not app-tested
Diagnosis uses pseudoisochromatic plates โ the Ishihara test, those dotted circles with a number hidden inside. A study reported by the AAO found testing can be done reliably from about age 4. The same reporting notes home assessments often give unreliable results, and phone or laptop versions are worse still, since screen calibration and room lighting change what you see. Ask for colour vision testing at a comprehensive eye exam.
Tell the school, in writing
A teacher who knows will stop writing key points in red on a whiteboard, will label the coloured pencils, and will put a pattern or a word on a chart as well as a colour. None of that costs anything, and none of it happens if nobody tells them. In the US, a child may qualify for a 504 plan.
Reframe it at home
AAPOS notes this is usually not a severe limitation, because children adapt by reading other cues โ brightness, position, order. Teaching the fixed order of traffic lights, or labelling clothes, gives your child a strategy rather than a deficit. It will not worsen, and it will not take their sight.

How do I know if my child is colour blind?
You usually will not be told, you will notice. Look for repeated odd colour choices in drawings, confusion between red, green and brown, or difficulty with colour-coded homework. AAPOS notes children often do not know they see colour differently, so the only way to be sure is a colour vision test at an eye exam.
What age can you test a child for colour blindness?
A study reported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology found colour vision testing can be carried out reliably from around age 4. Testing uses Ishihara plates, and the AAO notes home assessments often give unreliable results, so ask for it at a comprehensive eye exam.
Can colour blindness in children be cured or fixed?

Red-green colour vision deficiency is X-linked. As the NEI explains, boys need only one affected X chromosome, while girls need both to carry it, which is why it is far rarer in girls. A girl whose father is colour blind will be a carrier, and would only be affected if her mother also carries the gene.
Does a school vision screening check for colour blindness?
Typically no. School screenings concentrate on distance visual acuity, so a child can pass one and still have colour vision deficiency. If you want colour vision checked, ask for it specifically at a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Will being colour blind limit my child's career?
Only narrowly. AAPOS notes some roles can be harder, naming electricians, fashion designers, painters, cooks and military pilots, and certain aviation and military positions do have colour vision standards. The vast majority of careers are entirely unaffected.
