Getting Used to a New Prescription
A kid-friendly guide to help your eyes adjust to new lens powers!
Why Does My New Prescription Feel So Different?
Got new glasses with a stronger (or weaker) prescription? Your eyes might say,
“Hey! This doesn’t feel the same!”
Don’t worry — that’s totally normal.
·Things may look “too clear” or kind of funny at first
If your prescription changed a lot, your brain needs time to re-learn how far or close things really are.
· You might feel a little dizzy, tired, or even wobbly
That’s just your eyes and brain adjusting to the new lens power — they’re working as a team!
· Straight lines might look curved or slanted
Especially if you have astigmatism, new lenses can make edges and corners feel weird at first.
⏱ How Long Will It Take to Adjust?
Usually, your eyes adjust within a few days — but sometimes it takes up to 1–2 weeks, especially if:
· Your prescription changed a lot
· You switched from no glasses to wearing glasses
· You got your very first astigmatism correction
Everyone’s eyes are different — and that’s okay!
✅ Tips to Help Your Eyes Adjust Faster
1️⃣Wear your new glasses every day!
Even if they feel weird, try to wear them most of the time. Switching back to old ones will slow down the process.
2️⃣ Give your eyes short breaks if they feel tired
Rest your eyes for a few minutes by closing them or looking out the window.
3️⃣ Be in bright places when reading or playing
Good lighting helps your eyes feel more comfortable while they’re adjusting.
4️⃣ Talk to someone if it feels really bad
If you’re feeling very dizzy or the world feels too “spinny,” tell a grown-up. They’ll help you check in with your eye doctor.
⚕️ When Should You See the Eye Doctor?
Let your eye doctor know if:
· You’ve been wearing the glasses for more than 2 weeks and still feel super weird
· You have lots of headaches, blurry vision, or feel off-balance
· You think the lenses don’t match your eyes at all
Sometimes, the prescription may need a tiny adjustment — and that’s totally okay!
